Rebate Programs to Make Home Heating More Affordable in NH
By Joseph Sculley, Energy Marketers Association of New Hampshire
Spring has finally sprung here in New Hampshire, and I for one am looking forward to everything the warmer weather has to offer. That said, like many of us, I’m also looking for ways to save some money—from gas to groceries, it seems like everything is more expensive. And home heating is no exception to that rule, which is why I wanted to tell my fellow NH residents about an easy way to enjoy lower energy bills for year-round comfort.
It might come as a surprise to some, but there is a rebate program offered across New Hampshire that gives homeowners a chance to save on the installation of high-efficiency heating equipment and/or a new oil tank. This year, oil heat users can claim a rebate of $500 when they install a new oil boiler or furnace and $300 for a new oil tank. NH residents are invited to partake in both rebates, resulting in savings opportunities of up to $800 per household. Rebates on furnaces, boilers, and fuel tanks are available from May 1 through August 31, 2024, on a first-come, first-served basis.
In addition to state rebates, federal tax credits are available to incentivize homeowners to install high-efficiency heating equipment. This means oil heat users could get up to $600 back in tax credits on top of equipment rebates, totaling $1400 in potential savings waiting to be claimed. This is an incredible opportunity, due not just to the available rebates, but because of the many advantages that come with upgrading to a high-efficiency heating system.
Ultra-low sulfur heating oil and over 1,200 high-efficiency heating upgrades across the state is a winning combination, responsible for 3,240 tons of CO2 emissions reduced in New Hampshire. Not only that, but when homeowners use ultra-low sulfur heating oil in tandem with high-efficiency heating systems, annual fuel usage can be reduced by as much as 30%. This means that New Hampshire residents can enjoy savings on new high-efficiency heating equipment that uses less fuel, reduces emissions, and increases cost savings over the long term. In my opinion, it doesn’t get much better than that.
