Calculating Lowered Emissions & Money Saved on Home Heating in NH
By Joseph Sculley, Energy Marketers Association of New Hampshire
Summer is in full swing here in New Hampshire, and while we’re all busy enjoying everything the warmer temperatures have to offer in our beautiful state, it’s no secret that eventually the weather will start to get chilly again. When that happens, keeping our homes warm will be top of mind, and many of us are concerned about shrinking our carbon footprint as well. Let’s take a minute to explore the ways that high-efficiency heating equipment and ultra-low sulfur heating oil have worked to reduce emissions and save us money statewide.
The adoption of ultra-low sulfur heating oil has been a game-changer for reducing emissions. ULS heating oil produces 97% fewer airborne emissions compared to traditional heating oil 1. Additionally, a Department of Energy study highlights that upgrading a furnace or boiler from 56% to 90% efficiency can save an average of 2.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year in cold climates when using ULS heating oil2. The environmental impact is profound, with over 3,240 tons of CO2 emissions already reduced statewide since we began tracking the number of high-efficiency heating system upgrades in 20193.
The Granite State Saves with Oil rebate program incentivizes these upgrades further, making the transition more accessible to everyone. These rebates help offset the initial costs of new heating equipment, easing some homeowners’ reservations about upgrading their heating equipment. So far, $653,500 has been saved by homeowners who have upgraded to high-efficiency furnaces and boilers thanks to the Granite State Saves with Oil rebate program4. This underscores the dual benefit of these systems: they are both environmentally responsible and cost-effective.
Our state’s success story with ultra-low sulfur heating oil and high-efficiency heating systems sets a powerful example. It shows that with the right policies and technologies, significant environmental and economic benefits are achievable. By continuing to promote and adopt these innovations, New Hampshire can maintain its momentum towards a lower carbon and more financially prudent future.
