The winter months are right around the corner here in New Hampshire, and like many folks who live around these parts, you may be worried about how much home heating oil you’ll need to use to make it through the colder part of the year. You may even question and want to know more about what type of fuel you use in your tank. If you heat your home with oil in the state of New Hampshire, you currently use ultra-low sulfur heating oil, and this article intends to shed light on what ultra-low sulfur heating oil is, and how using this environmentally friendly fuel can help lead us toward a more sustainable future.

What Is Ultra-Low Sulfur Heating Oil & How it Helps the Environment

The vast majority of homeowners in New Hampshire would say that their top concern during the winter months is keeping their families warm, and the way a lot of residents in New Hampshire keep warm is by heating their home with heating oil. As previously mentioned, if you heat your home with oil in the state of New Hampshire, you already use ultra-low sulfur heating oil, but here’s some more information on what exactly it is, and how its environmentally friendly nature can help lead us toward a greener future.

Ultra-low sulfur heating oil is a newer version of fuel oil that contains significantly fewer sulfur parts per million and sulfur dioxide emissions than its counterparts. In fact, according to a report by the Energy Research Center, switching from heating oil with 2,000 ppm (parts per million) sulfur to ULS heating oil (15 ppm sulfur) results in a 99% reduction in sulfur oxide emissions.

The report also found that ultra-low sulfur heating oil produced 98% fewer emissions than standard heating oil. The study also noted that combined with a high-efficiency boiler, ultra-low sulfur heating oil can lead to significant fuel savings of around 30.2%, meaning that your heating oil is better for the environment, and better for your budget as well.

Ultra-low sulfur heating oil is also better for your heating system. In addition to the fuel savings of 30.2% just described, it reduces fouling in your heating equipment by a factor of 4.6. This means less cleaning and maintenance, with the cost-savings passed on to the end user.
